John Lawrence, DVM
Dr. Lawrence grew up in the Midwest. After graduating from Iowa State University in 1973 he moved to New Orleans, LA. Two years later he relocated in Baton Rouge, LA. Dr. Lawrence spent 25 years in private practice in Louisiana. During that time he developed a special interest in avian medicine, endoscopy, cytology and general surgery. In 1982 after recognizing the need for better continuing education for veterinarians in Louisiana, he established the Louisiana Academy of Veterinary Practice. That organization is still in place today producing quality education for veterinarians.
In 1995 Dr. Lawrence moved to Minnesota. He was motivated to move by Dr. Frances Smith. While in Minnesota working on a reproduction sabbatical in 1982, Dr. Lawrence became friends with Dr. Smith. Over the years he would consult with Dr. Smith about reproduction cases. The opportunity finally presented itself in 1995 to establish a professional relationship in Minnesota.
In 2000 Dr. Lawrence and Dr. Smith established Smith Veterinary Hospital, Inc. Through their collaborative efforts the 4500 sq. ft hospital developed into a complete medical and surgery hospital with a special interest in reproduction.
Dr. Lawrence throughout the years has developed several hobbies and interests. While in Baton Rouge Dr. Lawrence became involved with the United States Power Squadron. Today Dr. Lawrence is a member of the Hiawatha Power and Sail Squadron in Burnsville, MN. Since moving to Minnesota Dr. Lawrence has also become involved with horseback trail riding and AKC licensed hunt tests. Dr. Lawrence not only trains Labradors to compete but also judges at all levels of hunt tests.
Presently Dr. Lawrence serves on the Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine. The Board functions for the citizens of Minnesota as a source of consumer protection.
